Cambodia is located in south east Asia and has a population of around 15 million people. The country is a wonderful place to visit with friendly people and beautiful landscapes.
The country suffered in recent history frome the communist terror regime of the Khmer Rough. Led by Pol Pot, the Khmer Rough forced people to leave cities to destroyed industrial building, separated families and killed anyone they deemed to be "educated". An estimated 2 million people were killed by the Khmer Rough between 1975 and 1979 - around 1/3 of the population of Cambodia.
Today the country had moved on from these dark time but the fall out from the Khmer rough is still evident.
The majority of Cambodians lives in the countryside, many with a lack of access to clean drinking water, electricity or medical supplies. The country had a lack of qualified teachers and many children don't attend school as they have to work.
The Impact of Tourism
Siem Reap is the main tourist area of Cambodia with visitors coming from all over the world to see famous temples Angkor Wat. Cambodia receives around 2 million visitors per year.
In recent years Cambodia's growing tourism sector has helped many local people. Unfortunately most Khmer people, and particularly those without English language skills, have not seen the benefits of this growth.
There is very tittle local loyalty in Cambodia with high paid and qualified jobs often going to Thai or Vietnamese people becuase of their higher skills. Even hotels in Cambodia will often buy their fruit and veg from neighboring countries rather than local people.
